Current/Recent Projects & Publications Women of color who serve in educational leadership positions face inequities and deal with microaggressions more frequently in the workplace. Autoethnography scenarios serve as illustrations to demonstrate the racial and gender biases that exist, as well as the microaggressions the author has faced as a woman of color. It is time to take a proactive approach by providing training at all levels within the educational environment. Professional development focused on equity and microaggression can promote more equitable practices and raise awareness. Click on the picture to view the article. In order for teachers and students to thrive both academically and behaviorally in the teaching and learning environment, school culture has to be defined in many ways to include beliefs, values, moral judgments, behaviors, etc. Yet, the part of school culture which has to be most focused is on school setting – it is here where adults model the interactions and practices they expect students to follow for impactful learning to occur. Additionally, failing to allocate highly effective teachers to students who possess some of the greatest disadvantages as well as significant learning challenges has often resulted in an inequitable distribution of highly effective teachers for all students. Because schools were initially and intentionally designed to educate primarily a white population as well as those from wealthy families, students of color were long denied formal educational opportunities and improving schools did not include strategies for addressing these gaps. Thus, new approaches to school improvement include considering many aspects of data through an equity lens. Leadership B.A.N.C. partners have supported Cumberland County Schools in partnership with the SWiFT Project, of Kansas University and UNC-Greensboro to build capacity in Equity-Based MTSS practices.
